House of Shadows
A house designed for a couple who serve as gatekeepers of two memorials at the southern tip of NYC’s Roosevelt Island. The house has no artificial lighting and instead manipulates natural light throughout the day, seasons, and year. Positioned between the ruins and the memorials, the house’s form extends westward over the East River, framing Manhattan. Thoughtfully placed windows, screens, and oculi track the sun and moon, creating unique interior and outdoor spaces defined by light and shadow. Drawings created in collaboration with SPG Architects.
